EMEL MATHLOUTHI M'ERROUH (FROM THE SOUL)

Tunisian-born, New York-based experimental singer Emel Mathlouthi is a true artist. Her music goes beyond the singular experience, instead it extends out to the listener who will carry the lasting impression with them out into the world. M'errouh (From The Soul)’ is a striking commentary on today’s society. As Mathlouthi shares: “It is the song of the apocalypse, pointing at the horizon. The song of the tragic exodus of millions of people across the planet, escaping the fatal menace: Capitalism. Nature becomes another character in the story, that at turns transforms into a villain that’s coming after us for revenge, for all the harm we’ve been doing to it.” The dystopian visage comes to the fore through a minimalist and cold electronic production, featuring beats and pads made from the rhythmic sounds of nature including wind, oceans, and fire. Taken from the composer, songwriter and producer’s album Everywhere We Looked Was Burning, this track has re-emerged with self-directed visuals of isolating close-ups of frozen nature, while Mathlouthi dances drenched in blood red garments. Her voice is nothing but impressive, pressing on through the song with a controlled sense of urgency as she lays out the inevitable. - Hannah Thacker   [Photo Credit: James Mountford]
